Discussion:  Fixing up an old Hyster E30AS - need manuals and advice

Hi Experts - would appreciate some advice!

I just purchased a non-operational 1975 Hyster E30AS for a few hundred $'s - it has no battery pack and has been sitting outside for a couple of years. My hope is to get it going for odd-job use around my workshop.

This is my first forklift. Any-one have experience with these old units? Parts availability?

I managed to buy a service manual CD online (waiting for it to arrive in the mail), but still need to locate a parts manual - any-one?

Is it normal for the front wheels to be locked solid, along with the brake pedal? The lever is down. I suspect the brakes are frozen up? I had to winch all 5,000lbs of it onto my trailer - ugh! It's staying there for now - I hope to drive it off one day!

Is it 36V or 48V? I plan to use three or four 12v auto batteries in series and get it up and running that way initially. That way if it turns out to be a lemon I'll just send it in for scrap metal to cover my costs.

Thanks! Keith.

This truck probably is no bargain. A new battery is going to be in the $3500.00 range. If you install automotive batteries in it, first you will probably get 20 minutes of run time out of it and secondly you will have no counterweight in the machine, since the battery is essentially the counterweight. I suspect that the reason that you could not move the truck is that it should be equipped with a seat brake and you must have weight on the seat in order to move the truck. If you did get the wheels to move without disengaging the seat beake you may have either broken the drive motor armature shaft or an axle shaft.

Have seen them run on car batterys and walled off with a bunch of junk to cover some of the weight.put your batts in and see what happens.Should be a tag to tell if its 36 or 48.By the way dont use this where other people can get on it and use it or osha can evere find it or 3500 for a battery will be a bargin.

Thanks for the replies! Turns out it is either 36v or 48v, so I'm using 4 of the largest 12v marine batteries from Walmart - now I can use my 48v golf cart charger for this too. I had to clean up the electricals etc and have got it going and have used it to hoist a 500lb compressor off my trailer, as well as some lighter stuff - it works just great for my at home use - saving my back. Next to do are the brakes. Still looking for a parts manual - any-one? Thanks!

These trucks have a mechanically operated seat brake, where the brake is on the end of the drive motor.
It is quite possible that the lever between the seat and brake drum has siezed.

Hi, yes when I got it home I found out that the parking brake drum had rusted solid to the parking brake shoes etc - after removing it all the forklift rolled just fine. Thanks! Happy Holidays!
