Move to USA/ Australia cost of living versus wages.info anyone?

Hi all,
Am contemplating a move from the UK to the states or Australia and was wondering how the wages stack up versus the cost of living in the two countries?
I got off the tools 2 years ago in the Uk and am now working as a Crane/forklift inspector as the money in the UK was terrible unless you were doing crazey overtime shifts, So I am really looking to find out if they are better paid for their skills over in those areas of the world?
Lets face it , we have to be a sparky,a mechanic and a welder fabricator and also good at magic tricks " can you fix it as we are in a hurry" or..." we have no money in the budget , cant you fix it without those parts??"
so...feel free to post your thoughts,

Hi scots i can't give you alot of advise regarding the pros+cons,i went down this route last year but decided against it due to family reasons,If you go on the Linde website they are looking for service engineers to relocate to Australia at the minute,they also are very helpful regarding the best way to go about it.

Also i am looking to get off the tools and have been trying to get into inspections do you work for one of the large insurance companies if so do you have any tips,i have been knocked back by a couple for not having a HNC/HND,even though i served a City+Guilds apprenticeship in FLT technology and have 20yrs experience as a engineer.

Hi Herald,
Most of them wont even give you a interview unless you have a hnc to be honest, if your employer wont let you do it day release(like mine didnt....) then its 2 years 3 nights a week, but its worth it in the long run.
I have sent my CV to the linde website add on this site last night so I will see if they are interested, I would also consider canada as well, but I just dont know enough about the wage structures in all the countries to make a informed opnion on it,hence my post here, I would have prefered to stay in the Inspection industry but, I dont mind getting my hands dirty and going back on the spanners if thats what it takes to move .
ps if you have any more information on what you found out about relocating , I would be glad to hear it.
Oh, and while i remember, allianze are recruiting like mad at the moment and i understand they have relaxed their entry requirements a bit as they found they were puting off many good engineers out of hand because of a bit of paper, as i understand it, they are starting people with out a hnc at the minute and puting them through NVQ4 .

Hi thanks for that info i will try again,i can't offer you anymore about relocating,i did just what you are doing contacting Linde,i found them very helpful,they have a scheme in place to help people relocate.A ex work colleage of mine went working for Linde australia,i have not spoke to him personally but have heard from others that its the best move thing he ever did.

Lets be honest it can't be worse than working in the UK.I now have people paid more for breaking the forklifts than i do fixing them and i cannot see any change for the future.
If its right for you go for it.You can always come back and walk into a flt job again.

Thanks Herald,
I hope this isnt considered too forward a question to ask I know how low the wages are here in the uk for forklift truck engineers but was wondering if anyone could give me a Idea of what would be considered an average service engineers salary in the USA and what would be considered to be a low/High package?
Any information is appreciated,
