Hi
We are located in Scotland and have a Toyota 2FD30 diesel forklift with automatic transmission, when we engage either forward or reverse the machine will only drive if on a level surface, as soon as you are on a slight incline or running over a step or obstruction the engine revs but the drive stops, you can still feel the drive engaging when you decrease and increase the revs but it doesnt go forward or backward.
Can anyone suggest what this might be ?
The transmission fluid is full and clean looking.
Also would there be a place to download a user manual for this forklift ?
Bob

SOUNDS LIKE IT MAY BE A TORQUE CONVERTER PROB. IF A TORQUE CONVERTER IS GOING BAD IT STARTS TO WORK AGAINST ITSELF, & CAN CAUSE THAT TYPE OF PROB. HOWEVER A DIESEL TC IS USUALLY A LITTLE DIFFERENT THAN A LPG UNIT.  SORRY I DON'T HAVE ANY MANUALS, BUT IF YOU CAN FIND ONE, SEE THE SECTION ON LOCKUP PRESSURES, THAT MAY GIVE YOU A STARTING PLACE

Its hard to say if u dont go and look at it
1.Is your fuel filters or lines partial blocked  i had a 8 ton truck that ran fine on the flat but wasnt keen going up hills and it was the inline filter had a 3 ton truck with the same faults you have but on a gas and that was a fuel fault to?
2 As damo says is any of the inching mechanism sticky
3.If u suspect you have a fault with the transmission you have to pressure test it first before even thinking about stripping the transmission as for a suspected  torque converter being faulty  u wont really no unless u take it out and get it checked
If i was u i would check out the fuel system and inching system first.
I think its gordon lietch is your closest toyota dealer im sure they have engineers that work in the caithness ares
By the way if u are going to check out the fuel system i always drain the tank and clean it and put fresh diesel in and u have to take the sender unit out and check that there isnt a filter in there and then there is the elbow at the top of the sender can choke there as well.

also possible the pickup tube is aspirating air. yes, check and adjust inching just in case.

id be curious what the main and clutch pressures are on level and on incline, there will be various small test ports on the control valve head where you can take these readings. there should also be a trans cooler pressure and return port and possibly a lubrication pressure port.

check them all. if you find one that only gives a reading in gear, thats your clutch pack pressure for that gear. the pressure will dump with inching depressed. now look for one that gives readings in forward and reverse, and dumps when inching is depressed. that's your main.

if the cooler is plugged you will see a large pressure drop across it.

The symptons are a tell tale sign of a worn transmission. Is it worse once the oil is hot?
The only way too tell if the problem is inside the transmission is to do pressure checks. The service manual will tell you the location of where the ports are and what each pressure reading should be. If there is one that is too low unfortunatley you will have to rip into the transmission but at least you will know where the problem is.
