I'm sure that this will be the first of hundreds of opinions. I watched the videos and it seems that they are hanging their hats more on the John Deere engine than on the Crown name. I didn't see any real advancemnets in lift truck design except for maybe the flex back seat.
I would have expected a lot more from a company that has won so many design awards. Talk about ergonomics, where is the spinner knob?  Where is the armrest with the joystick controls?
As far as major lift truck design advancements go, I believe nothing can touch a Linde.

hamech is still around.... the crown will be the premium truck and the hamech will be the lower cost alternative. crown is only starting out 4k-6k trucks, hamech will cover the rest...

Advatages? The thing has access 123, 3000hour interval maintenance checks on the breaks, 1000 hour oil changes, engine rated 2x anyone else including Linde, great visability, not to mention the fastest lifting speeds in the ic world. It also has 2 different modes to either run the fastest, or run the most fuel efficant compared to anyone else...

This unit is now the finast LP truck ever manufactured. It will set a whole new standard for all other manufactures to try and duplicate. Anyone that has a negative thought about this unit obviously does not now all of the details on what went into making this fine unit or could it be that they are scrambling to try and compete. Every so often a product is developed that creates a paradigm shift and this unit has done just that!

Just watched the video, from what i could see apart from a new engine and dry disc brakes and a floating seat back the machine is still 5-10 years behind Linde. Maintenance free brakes, hydrostatic transmission, Linde Load control, etc. I am sure the machine is a quality product but as far as technical innovation still a way behind most European manfacturers

Really?

I have only one name to mention "Carraro" for the transmission.
For anyone who is not familiar with their products, look it up and check some of their customers....
You see, all the arguments I am hearing some far are about innovation. Let me tell you something; innovation is only good when it leads to real advantages, lets talk about durability, productivity, maintenance cost over the life of the truck (value), oh, and by the way lets go buy a Linde OEM spare part.....

Why would Crown even consider tapping into the IC market in the first place is the question I have to ask? Not impressed with the presentation (as a buyer) a handful of "test" customers ranting about "productivity" is very lame. Still not even close to a Yale/Hyster product.

Time will tell, but its a far cry from cutting edge like we have seen in the past five years.

You guys over that side of the pond don`t come across many still trucks because i can say hand on heart they are one of the most technologically advanced trucks on the market.
Relatively slow running engine electric drive and control i.e hybrid. A while ago one of our customer did a fuel efficiency test of there own still verse linde in a brick work enviroment still came out on top. other trucks would not work well in the brick yard conditions.
the last time we were told clarks were great was the introduction of the new cmp which was a tcm tailift samuk .

Vic, that is an easy question.
Market share.
Crown is tapping in the IC market for a simple reason, class IV and V represent a considerable % of the overall lift truck sales in the US.
I would do the same thing, especially if I would have the confidence of having a top notch product. This truck is build to last, it is a workhorse that will not stop. Believe me, I saw it, and not only for the past month. And it does have power, lots of power......

I'm not a tech but this looks like a sweet truck.  Where I find fault, maybe the wrong forum, are the countless operator errors taking place during both films.  I would have expected Crown to tape their C-5 working with safety in mind.

Sorry if I posted here but just my observation.

I am glad to see Crown entering the IC market. I must say that I am a little biasis since I "cut my teeth" working on Crown products. The thing I suspect is even someone like myself  who had moved up to a Branch Managers level  at a Crown dealership may not be willing to pay $8,000-$10,000 more per truck than any other brand. This would be a hard sell even for a die-hard fan of Crown products. I do wish them well on this venture!

in reply to Vic's question as to why crown should try and go I/C? I would bet it was "customer driven".
Crown has never seemed to me to be a "speculation driven" company. they had firm orders for the "wave" before it went to design, and I am willing to bet they had a locked in customer (?Lowes home improvement stores?) before the I/c conversations ever got to the design phase.

I have not seen the new Crown IC unit myslf but have heard that there have been some cooling issues due to the vacuuming effect on this truck being too much. Has anyone had any experience with these to see this?
Thanks

I think that if you were to look at this truck objectively, that is to say, change the decals from Crown to Whatever forklift, the glowing remarks wouldn't be so glowing.
What's the big deal about all of the power on a cushion tire truck that is used only indoors in relatively confined spaces?

Crown needs to stay in narrow aisle where they belong.  There is not any way Crown is going to compete in the IC market with suppliers such as Toyota, Lindi, or Nissan.  They will see that they are not in Crown World anymore.  The IC market is a street fight and the Yuppies from Crown will find themselves somewhere they do not want to be.

Why you say Crown is not going to compete in the I/C market.  First of all, the majority of the Crown dealers have handled and supported  I/C units from Komatsu & Daewoo (maybe others) for many years I would suspect they are capable.  This model range is strictly 4-6K cushion units that are used primarily indoors and that's were Crown main line plays well.  Having a Crown made  & labeled product will give them some added advantages in their primary market place.

Further they will get a lot of mileage out of "paid for demos" through their rental fleet exposures.

Just today I've seen in person, and heard running the new Crown C-5.  I understand the skepticism of a company whose name is only big in narrow isle electric trucks, and that's only natural.  But plain and simple, this looks and sounds like a pretty sweet ride.  Also, I've worked on lots of Cats, A/C, Daewoo, and Clark gas trucks.  Everything on the C-5 is the most maintence-friendly that I've ever seen.  Change the water pump without dropping the counterweight....and the O2 sensor comes out in 45 seconds.  I almost hope they break down so I get to turn a wrench on it some time soon :-)

Daryl i,
"the last time we were told clarks were great was the introduction of the new cmp which was a tcm tailift samuk"
I am affraid your above statement is completely wrong.
The Clark CMP has nothing in common with tcm tailift and  samuk. The CMP is the old Samsung product which used mainly Clark major components, ie transmission, mast and steer axle. The gas machines use Mitsi and the others all use Nissan. The diesel has always used Yanmar the others used Isuzu untill recently changing to Yanmar(except TCM I think)The CMP is still being built in Korea(the others being built in Taiwan and China) but is being super seeded by the CQ. Clark also build the GEN2 range which is a very well built and basic machine.

Linde are still in front on the design side along with junghienrich who's new hydrostatic trucks
are now beating Linde in Europe . They use same VW engine but different transmissions that are similar. Torque transmissions with brakes are now years behind hydrostatic trucks . It will be interesting if Crown now look to develop a range of other ic trucks in the past they have used Daewoo  in this range and komatsu for Hamach.
