Toyota -Maxing out hydraulics stalls engine

Hi All
I am looking to buy a reconditioned forklift from a local dealer and kind have narrowed it down to a Toyota 7FGCU25. My only concern is in regard to the engine and hydraulic system. On the unit I demoed, I noticed that with the machine idling, if any of the hydraulics Lift, Tilt, Side shift, or steering are maxed out the machine stalls. The Toyota salesperson told me the machine just needed a tune up & carbon cleaned out of the engine to rectify the problem. Although the sales manager also told me its normal for the machine to choke & stall when the tilt back is held in the maxed out position, do to a fairly low idle speed needed to meet emissions. Is this stalling normal, a design problem with Toyotas, or the machine just not setup properly? I have tried a Nissan JC50 without this issue at all, and that dealer told me they have some sort of governor which raises the idle when the hydraulics are under load. Does Toyota not have such a component?

We have experienced this problem on many Toyota's that we have worked on. It is most notable when actuating the tilt circuit. I believe that the engine is undersized and no amount of tuning it up or cleaning out the carbon will rectify the situation. TCM had the same problem, so what they did was add an "idle up" device to the carburetor which bumps up the RPM's when the engine is taxed. Typical Japanese technology, instead of using a powerful enough engine that might raise the price of the truck they install a $12.00 item to hide the fact that the engine is too small.
Well anyway, we have had many Toyota users complain about the stalling and we have been retrofitting the "idle up" device onto the carburetor and it stops the truck from stalling.

Hey Richard

Thanks for your speedy reply. Could you please elaborate on this device, Manufacturer / Part number if you recall. I searched the web but couldn’t find any specifics. Also are their any negative side effects of such a retrofit.

Sounds like a salesman answer. It may need the timing checked. If you warm up the machine and it still does it it needs either regulator screw adjusted wich is the for low idle mix or maybe a tuneup. If it had been reconditioned it shouln't have that problem. Haven't heard of that retro fit.

Obviously you guys are in a different country so the setup of the unit may be slighty different, but having spent the last 5 yrs on toyota in oz you should find if it has a 5k or 4y engine in it, it already has a vacuum operated idle up device on it.if you look under the bonnet it on the rear of the carburetor towards the radiator. Most trucks of any brand have used these for years, it nothing new. Id go with bighusky's response that it more than likely hasnt been tuned properly.

yes, i'd check relief pressures on auxillary circuit probably located on the control valve.
and, does this unit have a dashpot (vac operated) on the throttle linkage of the carb?
I've found in the past when there is a stalling issue from a load it's either this not being adjusted correctly or the aux hyd pressures being set too low.
