Hitachi produces the diagnostic monitor (SST) for working with the Nissan K engines. The problem is this tool is around $2800 dealer's cost. Sure you can get in through the accelerator pedal and check flash codes on the dash however you must have the SST to do learn fucntions like idle air volume learn and self learn. Granted this is a nice tool when you look at all it can do as far as being an osciliscope and VOM waranting that price tag but here is the thing, you have so many lift trucks in the field with the k- engine now that technicians are having to share the tool because lets face it most dealers are only going to buy one of these SSTs at this price.
I went on to Hitachi's website and saw that they also make the diagnostic tools for automobile OBDII. They offer cheaper diagnostic solutions for the OBDII stuff like a cable and software disk to use with a laptop. I tried to email Hitachi 3 times with no response and have made contact with Nissan engine about it also with no response about making this cable and software option or just some cheaper tool to work on these engines. Now I know that Nissan forklift uses a VCM which allows their techs to use a PDA which is nice but I can't get over the fact that so many manufacturers are using this engine and no one in the aftermarket has come up with a cheaper diagnostic tool like you see for OBDII. You can buy plenty of aftermarket scan tools for them. Oh and they don't work on these engines by the way in case you were thinking about trying one since they have the same J1962 connector as the K-engine trucks because I did. The OBDII software built into them isn't compatible.
So anyway, am I the only one that feels this way? Does anbody out there know how to pull some strings with Nissan or Hitachi to come up with a cheaper Diagnostic tool for the K-engines?

there has been laptop and pda software for those trucks since they came out (k21-k25 2004-2006)
they are not obdII since they only have 1 o2 sensor  tier 3 (2007) has up and downstream o2 sensors and is more closely related to obdII but the software is still custom made
i have the mitsu version the earlier/pda version is called gse tool i think (or psi  i forget 1 of those is for the impco system)
mitsu later replaced that with uptime for laptops
my mitsu software works on platnium nissans but on the mitsus for most tier 2's you can only access the vcm port under the right step
you only really needed the hitatchi handset to set up nissan tb45s (inline 6 cyl) but i believe uptime now covers that too
you wont get that handset firmware it is proprietory and only comes with the handset
look into getting the laptop tool (plus the laptop gives you better machine coverage overall if you can find some1 to sell you the software)
using a laptop with onboard serial ports is better than using a usb to serial converter (pcmcia/cardbus card isnt a good choice either)

i highly doubt an aftermarket solution will be available as this is not for automotive use
industrial use is a whole different animal

I have diagnozer for cat and its 1 update behind.Works on some of the nissan trucks.Cat wont sell it.Its password protected. Can this be cracked and run with a diffrent program>Sure if you have a truck a keylogger and do the access through the pedal while the key logger records but you have to know where to hook into the vcm to record it and hope you dont fry it while you work. All systems can be hacked most automotive has been some require a chip some just a flash.I think flash will work on these.Someone on this site was working on a program but I never heard back from him.I dont expect anyone to make aftermarket software but only time will tell.

I'm working on TCMs which don't have the VCM setup or 4 pin connector that you guys are using on the Nissans, komatsus and the like. So I,m pretty much stuck with the SST right now.
