Crown's FC4000 Series forklift has won a gold award in the business & industrial products section of the 2003 Industrial Design Excellence Awards.
The judges said the four-wheel, sit-down counterbalanced electric forklift demonstrated a marriage between function and aesthetics.
"Simple, clean, well-executed details (and) totally designed," juror Tom Matano said. "This truck can stand alone in front of the building rather than in the back of the warehouse. This sets a new standard for this category."
Through user and product research, Crown said it identified an opportunity to set new standards in ergonomics, create an innovative design and simplify servicing.
The FC4000 Series features an operator-forward concept that differs from traditional ergonomics. The overhead guard uses round tubing that arches away from the operator and eliminates the need for separate grab handles. Crown says the steering column, which pivots from a low, sculpted cowl, is the narrowest in the industry.
Crown said production volume and sales of the FC4000 had doubled over the previous model since its introduction in 2001. The company did not disclose specifics.
Crown will receive its award at a ceremony in New York on August 16. Jurors chose entries for 38 gold, 38 silver and 45 bronze awards.
