 Fatal accident Banbury UK |
Comatra introduces COMATRA TP2AGRIC, a cost-effective and reliable tire pressure monitoring system. The benefit of pneumatic tires on a telehandler is that they provide improved flotation as it transports loads over soft ground construction sites.
The downfall is that pneumatic tires are easily damaged or punctured by nails, screws and other construction materials. As a telehandler is being loaded and driven, the tires will also gradually loose air.
Deflating tires can be a serious safety issue, as the stability of the telehandler is sometimes affected.
 Punctured tire |
In 2013, the UK HSE, the CPA and the Telescopic Handler Association of Australia acknowledge in their guide "Safe Use of Telehandler in Construction" that even a 5% drop in tire pressures can reduce stability and safe lifting capacity by 30 percent!
A flat or under-inflated tire on a telehandler with a load in the air alters the machine's stability and can cause fatal accidents.
Investigation into a fatal accident with a tipped-over telehandler in Banbury, United Kingdom, in 2008 showed that the incident was preventable if operating instructions in the machinery manual had been followed. Tire pressures were found to be lower than recommended.
 Comatra monitor |
Tire pressures on telehandlers should be checked daily. But the procedure of checking tire pressures with a standard gauge is seen as a hassle and often skipped.
In answer to this problem, Comatra introduces
COMATRA TP2AGRIC, a cost-effective and reliable tire pressure monitoring system.
Unlike other systems on the market that plug into the tire stem dust cap, the pre-programmed sensors of the
TP2AGRIC are mounted behind the wheel rim, keeping them safe from dirt and other corrosive materials or hazardous conditions that can cause damage.

Where other systems often need to be moving a certain speed before they are activated, the
TP2AGRIC turns on almost immediately after turning on the vehicle. It will monitor pressures from 0.4 bar to 7.0 bar ( 6 to 101 psi ) and report pressures of all 4 tires in either bar, kPa or psi terms.

If pressure changes more than 10 percent or temperature exceeds 80°C (176° F), an audiovisual alarm alerts the driver.
The
COMATRA TP2AGRIC Telehandler and Rough Terrain Forklift TPMS kit includes the following:
- Four valve-mounted tire pressure/temperature sensors.
- One tire pressure/temperature display monitor.
- One 12-24V monitor power supply cable with plug adapter.
- One display mounting bracket.
The kit is easily installed by either you or by a tire fitter and instructions are included.
Each of the sensors has a battery life of five years, while the in-cab monitor runs from either a 12-volt or 24-volt supply.
As every sensor has a unique signature and is programmed to just one display, there will never be any problem mounting the system on several machines working side by side.
