1.BT INDUSTRIES: BACKLOG BOOSTS BALANCE SHEET
---------------------------------------------
MJOLBY, Sweden BT Industries has reported its highest-ever sales and income figures.

Sales rose 15 per cent to SEK13.2 billion, and net income rose eight per cent to SEK888 million in 2001. The company expects decreased demand this year, but said it was confident of long-term growth in the industry.

BT said an order backlog from 2000 boosted its balance sheet as the European and US markets dipped, the latter by 25 per cent.

Last year BT halved the acceleration and deceleration times on its Powerdrive system and its Orion pallet handlers performed well globally. BT also reconfigured the pedals of its Reflex AC reach stacker to duplicate those of a normal car.

BT was acquired by Toyoda Automatic Loom Works in July 2000. BT imports Toyota materials handling products in Scandinavia, and BT is distributed in Japan. BT took over Raymond, the US market leader for warehouse trucks, in the mid 1990s, and bought niche Italian forklift maker Cesab in 2000. BT is an exhibitor at CeMAT in Hannover next month.

2.KAUP ANGLES FOR SLICE OF US ATTACHMENTS PIE
---------------------------------------------
ASCHAFFENBERG, Germany Kaup GmbH, a leading European forklift attachments maker, will use the NA 2002 exhibition, from April 8-11 in Detroit, USA, as a launch pad to break into the Cascade-dominated US attachments market.

Kaup said in a statement that it would team with newly-appointed US distributor Servolift, of Rockaway, New Jersey, to begin the US assault. Exhibits, apart from standard attachments, will include Kaup's rotating fork clamp, sideshifting fork positioner, appliance clamp, single and double pallet handlers and versions of its side shifters.

Kaup will exhibit at three major materials handling gatherings this year, with show spaces booked at CeMAT 2002, from April 15-20 in Hannover, Germany, and Logis-Tech 2002, from October 15-19, in Tokyo. Kaup said it would exhibit several attachments which would interest visitors "looking for optimal solutions".

Kaup, founded in 1962 by president Otmar Kaup, produces 33,000 units annually. It has 500 employees and a turnover of USD42 million.

3.FIVE-YEAR DEAL FOR CHESHIRE CAT DEALER
----------------------------------------
CHESHIRE, United Kingdom Union Court, an authorised Caterpillar Lift Trucks dealer, has struck a five-year forklift contract with British Salt Ltd of Middlewich, a subsidiary of US Salt Holdings.

Six two-tonne capacity K-series forklifts have been supplied so far, in a full-maintenance deal worth more than EUR306,000 (USD275,000) for Union Court. Salt's future requirements are unknown.

Union Court spokesman Jeff Page said the dealer won the contract through a tender process from "some very tough competition". The forklifts featured unique Caterpillar anti-corrosion technology, he said.

4.UNHEARD OF: EARPLUGS FOR GRUMPY INSOMNIAC
-------------------------------------------
LEEDS, United Kingdom A man who complained that a magazine distributor's noisy forklifts kept him awake at night has been given 11 boxes of ear plugs.

The complainant, Tony Douglas, said he had not had a full night's sleep for three years, since Menzies opened a depot in a nearby industrial estate.

"There's regular, intensive banging and crashing with forklifts unloading wagons and loading vans," he said. "That goes on until about 4.30am, then there's a lull before it starts again at 5.30am."

Mr Douglas said Menzies' response to his complaints was to supply ear plugs and tell him to sleep on his left side, as he is deaf in his right ear, according to a Yorkshire Evening Post report.

Mr Douglas said he could not sleep on his good ear, due to arthritis.

Menzies depot manager David Gwillingham would not comment. Environmental health officials from Leeds City Council are investigating the complaint.

7.PRESS RELEASE: COMBILIFT IS DHL EXPORTER OF THE YEAR 2001
-----------------------------------------------------------
MONAGHAN, Ireland Combilift Ltd has been crowned DHL exporter of the year for 2001 by the Irish Department of Enterprise, Trade & Employment.

At a ceremony in Dublin, Minister Noel Treacy presented Combilift with a trophy, EUR6348 in international shipments, and a further EUR6348 for overseas marketing.

"Combilift (is) to be congratulated on its commitment to innovation and persistence in pursuing opportunities in the global competitive marketplace," Mr Treacy said.

Combilift was the first company in the world to develop an all-wheel-drive, engine-powered four-way forklift, which is now exported to 29 countries. Launched with three staff in 1998, the company now occupies a 60,000 square-foot plant and employs more than 60 people. Turnover has increased 98 per cent in the past year, a remarkable achievement in a highly-competitive marketplace.

"Combilift was awarded the title in recognition of strong, focused growth, built on a clearly defined strategy, which combines marketing flair and truly innovative products," DHL managing director Peter Lomax said at the awards.

The innovative, multi-directional forklift is the result of four years' research and development by Combilift managing director Martin McVicar and technical director Robert Moffett.

Designed for handling long loads, from 2.5 tonnes to nine tonnes, in confined spaces, the Combilift is a forklift that moves forwards and backwards like a normal forklift or left and right like a sideloader. It can operate in aisles less than two metres wide, allowing users to achieve up to 60 per cent space savings.
