1. ATTICA BOOKS CANADAS LARGEST FORKLIFT DEAL
--------------------------------------------------
COQUITLAM, Canada
Attica Equipment Ltd, of Coquitlam, British Columbia, has won a five-year, CAN6 million (USD3.85 million) contract to supply Doman Industries, a log-miller based in Duncan, with 32 Kalmar log handlers.

Sales representative Gary Levers said 16 of the 30,000-pound (13.6-tonne) capacity Series 13.6-600 machines were already in operation. The other 16, on their way from Kalmars Swedish manufacturing facility, would be commissioned within three weeks. Mr Levers said the deal was believed to be the largest deal in Canadian history, on the number of machines ordered.

Under the contract, which Attica won ahead of serious bids from Caterpillar, Clark and Hyster, Attica will acquire Domans existing units, ranging in age from 1978 to late 1990s models, and sell them to used equipment dealers. Attica will supply maintenance at non-staffed Doman locations, and train existing maintenance crews to work on the Kalmar machines.

Mr Levers said the deal had taken more than 12 months of negotiations after the USA government introduced a 24 percent lumber tariff on Canadian imports to the US. While competition was tough, the quality of the Kalmar product was most suited to Domans requirements, Mr Levers said.

"Kalmar is a world leader in materials handling equipment and is gaining a considerable portion of the North American market as more companies identify the advantages," he said.

Attica Equipment has been a dealer for forklifts and other machinery to western Canada for 23 years. Products sold include Kalmar, TCM forklifts and Club Car golf carts and utility vehicles.

2. ORDERS DROP FOR KCI CRANES
---------------------------------
HYVINKAA, Finland
KCI Konecranes special crane sales were stable in January to June, but standard lifting equipment sales fell 17.5 percent compared to the same period in 2001.

Orders received were 16.3 percent down for special cranes and 16.9 percent down for standard lifting equipment, according to the companys January-June financial report. Standard lifting equipment now represents 28 percent of the groups total sales, accounting for EUR346.8 million (USD338.8 million) from January to June, compared to 33 percent in 2001. Total group sales dipped 3.2 percent, from EUR358.4 million (USD351.6 million) in 2001, to EUR346.8 million (USD340.2 million) this year. Other divisions, maintenance services and internal sales, contributed to the total group sales figure.

The order book at EUR269.6 million (USD262.9 million), was down 21.8 percent compared to the same period in 2001 but stands at a good level, according to the report.

Although the decline has now turned into a moderate growth in new orders, reaching last years standard lifting income level will be challenging. Special cranes is expected to develop according to plan, the report said.

3. BELGIAN FORKLIFT MARKET FEELS THE PINCH
----------------------------------------------
BRUSSELS, Belgium
While European forklift manufacturers reported a nine percent slide in the Belgian market in 2001, Sigma, which represents importers and materials handling representatives, says the market fell 14 percent.

Sigma said in its 2001-2002 annual report that 7329 units were sold last year, and the market had declined another six percent this year. It said 712 electrical three-wheel units and 687 electrical four-wheel units were sold in Belgium in 2001, down 15 percent and 29 percent respectively on the 2000 results.

In warehouse forklifts, sales of pallet trucks fell six percent to 2112, stackers fell three percent to 1064 units, and reach trucks dropped 10 percent to 579 units. System truck sales soared 35 percent to 183. The total, 3938 units, was four percent less than in 2000, according to Sigma.

5. TOYOTA ADDS ELECTRIC WALKIE STACKERS
-------------------------------------------
IRVINE, United States
Toyota Material Handling USA Inc (TMHU) has expanded its warehouse line-up with a new line of electric walkie stacker forklifts.

The new series has seven models, including straddle, counterbalanced and reach stacker forklifts with 2000 pound (900 kilogram) to 4000 pound (1.8 tonne) capacities.

Toyota, in a statement, said the Walkie Stacker models were ideally suited for pedestrian applications, from manufacturing and retail environments to general transport and product distribution.

TMHU president Shankar Basu said each model featured heavy-duty wheels and a durable frame for smooth performance in locations where stand-up or sit-down forklifts were too large.

We are committed to providing quality and value, he said. Our Walkie Stacker forklifts exemplify this effort, with superior engineering and design that results in increased efficiency, productivity and comfort, and overall cost-of-ownership savings.

Operator comfort was a big consideration, with each model featuring a multi-function control handle with oversized dual thumb wheels and buttons, for easy activation of all controls with either hand.

Safety also featured highly in the design, with a high-visibility mast providing a clear view of fork tips and a wider work area.

No detail of what markets the new line will be available in was available before publication.

TAMPIN, Malaysia
Six men have been arrested for stealing forklift parts and heavy machinery in the Tampin district in Malaysia this month.

District police chief superintendent Ab Wahab Azizul Hassan told the New Straits Times that the gang stole forklift parts, an air compressor and a truck valued more than RM100,000 (USD26,300) from a wood-processing factory on August 5. A hunt is on for four other gang members.

Police recovered the stolen items after the truck was abandoned when one of its tyres was punctured after the theft.
