Kalmar to assemble forklifts in US
Kalmar’s North American dealers are pleased that the company has started a forklift assembly line at its Ottawa, Kansas, plant, which originally built and marketed terminal tractors.
“The first Kalmar forklift, a DCE 160, was assembled in April and we are now ahead of our sales plan for US-assembled forklifts,” Randy Dennis, Kalmar’s North American sales vice president, said in a statement.
“We are mostly assembling Kalmar DCE 140s to 160s (lifting capacities of 14,000kg to 16,000kg),” he said.
“At a dealer meeting, several Kalmar dealers expressed their satisfaction with the decision to start the assembly operation. (They) are thrilled to have easier, quicker access to the product.”
Kalmar has 27 North American dealers in more than 170 locations.
Leif Wallin, president of Kalmar Industries Corp, Ottawa, said the new assembly line would shorten build times by up to 60 days, provide greater flexibility, improve parts availability and enhance technical support.
Design control and major component sub-assembly will still be carried out by Kalmar’s plant in Ljungby, Sweden. The US-made content of the forklifts will increase as Kalmar plans to phase-in more US-manufactured components, like diesel engines, masts, carriages and forks.
Warning on fraudulent forklift buyers
ATLANTA, GA, United States
An Atlanta forklift dealer wants to warn forklift dealers of fraudulent orders via stolen credit cards.
“I have been contacted many times over the past few months by email and Sprint Internet relay from people wanting to order large quantities of parts and wanting to pay by credit card,” she said.
The dealer said she had learned of similar experiences from other dealers and 99 per cent of requests were from people with stolen credit cards.

Hoist releases big lift for marina operations
BEDFORD PARK, IL, United States
US-based compact, heavy duty electric and internal combustion forklift manufacturer Hoist Liftruck Manufacturing Inc has released the Neptune Series marina truck.
The Neptune Series internal combustion pneumatic tyre forklift is designed specifically to address the needs of marina owners and operators. It has features like a robust negative drop mast, a wide-pivot fork swing carriage and “unmatched visibility”, a Hoist statement said.
Hoist president Marty Flaska said the company was continually seeking new niches that allowed it to draw on its experience in the heavy lift truck industry.
“With larger internal combustion heavy duty lifts already serving the steel, lumber and concrete industries, we feel offering a marine lift is a natural extension of this existing product line,” he said.
More support for Manitou dealers
Manitou BF will establish a new company in Sydney at the end of this year to complement its Singapore regional office.
Stuart Walker, national Manitou product manager of NTP forklifts, who will head the new company as commercial manager, said the sales, service and training centre was being established to cover the increase in Manitou’s market and product line.
“I’m looking for premises and staff for the new office, which will be officially launched in November,” Walker said.
The new company, which Walker said would be in Mascot, New South Wales, near Sydney Airport, would be a support mechanism for Manitou dealers.
“We expect there to be a lot of people coming in for training from interstate and overseas so we are looking for premises near the airport,” he said.
Walker emphasised the new office was not a retail outlet but a training centre that would cover the Asia Pacific region.
“We will focus on Australia in the early stages as it is one of the developing markets.”
He said Manitou also planned to open similar subsidiaries for China, Russia and other emerging markets.
The owners of Australian Manitou dealerships NTP Forklifts and LiftRite Toyota will be minority shareholders in the new company.
Rocla’s active distribution helps sales
Sales of Rocla forklifts continued to grow in excess of market growth, with the Finnish group’s forklift segment posting net sales of EUR41.8 million in the first half of 2005, a company statement said.
Growth was attributed to new models, active sales efforts in Rocla’s distribution network and the opening of new markets.
Deliveries to North America also contributed to strengthening overall growth in the first half of 2005, the statement said.
Meanwhile, the forklift and automated guided vehicle (AGV) manufacturer concluded its biggest single truck service contract at the end of the second quarter.
Oy Hartwell Ab’s Lahti plant outsourced its 150 warehouse and counterbalance trucks and 31 AGVs to Rocla.

Grocer first to receive clean-air grant
HOUSTON, TX, United States
A grocer has become the first company in the San Antonio area, Texas, to receive a clean-air grant from the Texas Railroad Commission’s forklift program (Forkliftaction.com News #208).
The San Antonio Business Journal reported HE Butt Grocery Co (HEB) received a USD39,530 grant to buy five new, low-emission forklifts as part of the Texas Emissions Reduction Plan.
Texas Railroad commissioner Elizabeth Jones said HEB’s new forklifts would lower smog-forming nitrogen oxide emissions in San Antonio by 7.9 tons (7,166kg) over their lifespan.
“That is equivalent to taking more than 370 passenger cars off San Antonio streets and highways,” Jones said.
State officials estimate that retiring 15 per cent of older forklifts could lower Texas’s nitrogen oxide emissions by 7,000 tons (6,350 tonnes) to 12,000 tons (10,886 tonnes). That is equivalent to removing 275,000 to 470,000 cars from the roads.
