Inside Forkliftaction.com
With enormous volatility in the global financial markets, it is encouraging to see some stability in one of the largest forklift markets - China. As we read in this week’s special report, the country’s forklift manufacturers seem to have emerged from the global financial crisis in reasonable shape. Repeatedly, the big Chinese names are saying that quality and service are the keys to survival, rather than radical cost-cutting. It seems that the tough times had some positive impact, rationalising the industry, shaking out some of the marginal players, and encouraging the mainstream manufacturers to strengthen their offerings and their business models. And all that bodes well for the future, whatever that may be…

The LTW Shuttle for Multiple-Deep Storage
When storage solutions calls for a method to store many pallets of the same SKU, a multiple-deep storage method (3-20 pallets deep from either side of a rack aisle) can be put into action.  Multiple-deep storage effectively uses the warehouse footprint by reducing the square-footage-per-pallet needed.  When deep lane storage is coupled with automated stacker crane technology, the result is a cost-effective, space-saving automated warehouse. Unique LTW Shuttle design which carries two pallets into the storage channel per trip greatly increases the number of pallets moved per hour.

Jøtul overhauls Fredrikstad with forklift
Fredrikstad, Norway
Jøtul AS, one of Norway’s oldest industrial businesses, has upgraded the materials handling fleet at its Fredrikstad manufacturing site with a Flexi G4 articulated forklift.

The Fredrikstad facility is important to Jøtul’s cast iron stove and fireplace manufacturing business because it contains the moulds that are used during production. Jøtul wanted a forklift that could handle the high throughput of its production centre where mould changeover times are critical.

Jøtul overhauled its materials handling processes at Fredrikstad and introduced powered mobile racking at the site to create the stacking aisle in which the articulated forklift could operate.

The width of the stacking aisle was set at 2 metres. Jøtul says it is able to achieve the maximum number of pallet locations at its site by combining mobile racking with the articulated forklift.

The FlexiG4 supplied to Jøtul features a low quad mast with the same lift height as a triple mast, but shorter in the lowered position to overcome overhead clearance issues on the truck’s route between the warehouse and the factory.

Narrow Aisle Flexi says the G4 has a unique “twin load wheel drive” that enables safe traction in all conditions, making it ideal for Jøtul’s needs. The forklift also has the Narrow Aisle Safe Start system, which allows the operator to restart the truck and move up an incline without rolling back.

Narrow Aisle launched the Flexi articulated forklift in 1990 and, since then, over 4,000 units have been sold. Over the past five years, the Flexi range has been developed to meet the requirements of diverse industries.

Jøtul has subsidiaries in t he US, France, Denmark, the UK, Spain, Italy and Poland and generates over 70% of its turnover from export.

Brewer says ‘no’ to grant for forklift fuel cells
Fort Collins, CO, United States
US Energy Secretary Norman Chu announced funding of USD41.9 million for fuel cell technology on 15 April 2009 (Forkliftaction.com News #407), but one of the recipients—a brewery of Anheuser-Busch InBev NV—opted recently to decline its grant of USD1.1 million.

Last year’s Department of Energy (DoE) press release said: “Anheuser-Busch will deploy 23 fuel cell systems as battery replacements for a complete fleet of electric lift trucks at their facility in Fort Collins, Colorado, demonstrating the economic benefits of large fleet conversions of forklifts from lead-acid batteries to fuel cell power units. Success in this project will lead to further fleet conversions at some or all of Anheuser-Busch's other 11 U.S. facilities.”

That is not going to happen, at least for now.

Apparently, negotiations between DoE and Anheuser-Busch broke down after the brewer identified unexpected costs it would need to incur.

Anheuser-Busch management utilises other existing clean-energy initiatives but, after a post-announcement project analysis, was unwilling to tackle aspects of fuel cell technology.

Anheuser-Busch InBev is based in Leuven, Belgium, has a portfolio of 13 global, multi-country and regional brewery brands and holds a global market share of nearly 25%.

Plans for US Open include more sponsorships
Springfield, OH, United States
The 16th annual US Open Forklift Rodeo & Safety Expo is scheduled for 29-30 October under sponsorship of the Springfield/Clark County Safety Council (SCCSC) and Forkliftaction.com.

A Jacksonville, Florida warehouse of a global foods company may send a team to this year’s competition in Springfield, according to Richard E Higgins, the event’s guru,  long-time behind-the-scenes organiser and author of an instructional manual on course layouts, possible individual and team events and pre-competition promotion.

Currently, Higgins is discussing opportunities for 2010 US Open mini-exhibits and presence with other potential co-sponsors in the corporate community. The goal is to increase prize levels for the winning forklift operators and continue to build the industry’s awareness of the US Open and related safety-oriented competitions around the world.

Higgins (Forkliftaction.com News #430) was a founding member and the first chairman of the SCCSC in 1994 and was instrumental in 1995 in starting a local forklift rodeo that now functions as the US Open.

Typically, Higgins and his team use a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet-based scoring system although he considers the manual posting of scores to have some benefits.

Higgins is a senior safety trainer and territory manager in the Springfield branch of Forklift Training Systems (Forkliftaction.com News #457).

Eric Zumbrin of KTH Parts Industries Inc in Saint Paris, Ohio was crowned champion of both the overall rodeo and the masters’ division at the 2009 US Open Forklift Rodeo in Springfield (Forkliftaction.com News #435).

Expert advises on a hole lot of safety
Milton Keynes, United Kingdom
A UK materials handling safety expert is warning forklift users to beware of pot holes and other surface defects caused by the recent freezing weather.

Peter Scott, a chartered health and safety practitioner who has a Master’s degree in safety management from Bournemouth University, warns that untreated pot holes and surface defects present in the yards of factories, warehouses and distribution centres could present health and safety issues.

“Deep pot holes could potentially tip forklifts over, particularly if that truck is travelling with a raised load. Of course, no forklift operator should travel with the load raised, but we all know that not all operators follow the rules,” Scott says.

Potholes form as asphalt surfaces crack over time. The cracks allow snow and rainwater to seep into the underlying dirt and gravel. In cold winter conditions, the water freezes and expands, pushing some of the dirt and gravel out and leaving a hole in the yard surface when the ice melts and the asphalt layer collapses.

Scott says that unlike cars, forklifts have no sophisticated suspension systems and risk damage to the axle and tyres after driving over pot holes.

He suggests forklift users with a yard that has suffered damage invest in pothole repair kits, which are available on the internet.

“Get the repair done before your truck fleet is damaged - or worse, one of your workers is involved in an accident.

“Also, with summer coming, untreated pot holes will generate dust which might result in mechanical problems,” Scott adds.

David Hoover, president of Forklift Training Systems and one of Forkliftaction.com News’s Safety First columnists, thinks that pot holes are not a major concern in the US. “In my opinion, the majority of forklift use in the US is inside operations, but that’s not to say there are not tens of thousands of forklifts that do occasionally go outside and those that only operate outside.”

“We use a huge amount of cushion-tyred units in the US, while many other countries have mainly air-filled tyres. I think this is because our typical surfaces are pretty decent for the most part,” he says.

From forklift driver to historian
Croydon, United Kingdom
A forklift driver has been accepted into a local heritage group that is one of the largest of its kind in the UK.

The Croydon Advertiser reported that Martin Miles, who started an interactive historical group on Facebook, spent months ‘courting’ The Bourne Society and has now been invited to join it.

Miles, 30, met the society’s key players this month and showed them his extensive collection of photos and stories. “It was a very proud moment for me, meeting the wizards of history,” he says. “They were so pleased to meet me and shocked that I was so young and doing all this as my little hobby.”.

Miles’ Facebook group has nearly 800 members with the numbers rising weekly. The forklift driver says he might consider a career change and is hoping his new friends can offer him a job.

The Bourne Society was founded in 1956 with about a dozen members. Today, it has 1,823 members and considers itself the largest heritage organisation in the UK.

Mitre 10 awards forklift lease contract
Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
Home improvement and hardware supplier Mitre 10 has awarded Toyota Material Handling Australia a five-year lease to provide it with a range of forklift products.

The company now supplies Mitre 10 with materials handling solutions for its nationwide network of distribution centres, servicing more than 450 hardware stores.

According to Mitre 10 Southern Region distribution centre manager Brett Manning, the contract has resulted in an instant improvement in workplace efficiency and safety.

He says the company specifically chose BT reach trucks for their ability to reach the extremely high racks in its warehouse, and because staff liked the units’ ergonomic controls and ease of operation.

Mitre 10's adoption of their supplier’s integrated fleet management system has also enhanced OH&S levels.

The fleet consists of 38 BT second-level man-up double-length order pickers, 21 BT reach trucks, 16 BT double-length pallet trucks and a range of Toyota LPG counterbalance forklifts, BT pallet trucks and Raymond man-up high-level order pickers.

Conference highlights safety issues
Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
Delegates at the Maritime Union of Australia’s Bulk and General Stevedoring Conference held this month have told of widespread management intimidation and bullying behind the poor safety culture on the wharves.

The three-day event held in Melbourne highlighted safety issues behind the recent spate of deaths and injuries on the nation's docks.

According to the MUA, six waterside workers have died in the past six years and all but one have been killed in bulk and general operations, highlighting the extreme dangers in the industry. Another four have very nearly died at bulk and general operations in Melbourne and Port Kembla in recent weeks.

"It's a major area of struggle," says Warren Smith, assistant national secretary. "You can have the best safety plan in the world and it's nothing if you are getting stood over and you're being told you're not going to get the bonus, you're not going to get trained, you're not going to get a permanent job (and) you're not going to get picked up if you speak out about safety.”

Among the resolutions taken was that the MUA should continue to pursue a stevedoring regulation framework within the process of the harmonisation of occupational health and safety acts. This regulation should underpin a National Stevedoring Code of Practice that promotes the safest possible waterfront working environment.

The conference called on the membership in all Bulk and General operations to actively support the campaign for the implementation of the National Waterfront Safety Campaign.

Business fined over forklift injury
Adelaide, South Australia, Australia
The importance of keeping forklifts and people separated was highlighted this month following the conviction of a South Australian transport company for breaching the Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare Act 1986.

The company, Rapid Refrigerated Transport, was fined $24,000 following an incident which occurred in 2007, in which a 56-year-old worker tripped over the tynes of a forklift as it was about to exit the curtained doorway of a cold-room.

The man suffered a head injury consistent with concussion at the time, but the court heard that the man’s condition had deteriorated after the incident to the point that he was no longer able to work.

The court was also told that both forklifts and pedestrians were required to use this common doorway, a situation Industrial Magistrate Stephen Lieschke said created “an unnecessary risk of collision… (which) existed on a daily basis”.

SafeWork SA says the case demonstrates the risk of harm that arises when people are not separated from working machinery such as forklifts.

According to acting executive director Juanita Lovatt, a traffic control system, rigorously and consistently enforced, is a must at all workplaces where machines such as forklifts are operating in close proximity to pedestrians.

New study to track containers
Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
Sydney Ports Corporation has commissioned a new study to investigate the movement of shipping containers into and out of Port Botany.

The primary objectives of the study are to determine:
• the ultimate origins and destinations within the Port Precinct, Sydney Metropolitan Area and regional NSW of import and export containers, including empty containers;
• the routes and transport modes used to move containers to and from Port Botany;
• the location, significance and volume of intermodal terminals, empty container parks, and container freight stations;
• the breakdown of ‘peak’, ‘non-peak’ and ‘weekend’ vehicle movements on Sydney roads; and
• where LCL containers are packed and unpacked and where cargo origins and destination are located.

According to chief executive Grant Gilfillan, “if we can find out exactly where containers are packed and unpacked and the routes the trucks take, we will have invaluable information to offer government for its strategic infrastructure planning, particularly in road and rail transport”.

Sydney Ports is seeking wide industry support for the study, with data sought from transport operators, stevedores, rail operators, empty container parks, intermodal terminals, container freight stations, the Australian Trucking Association (NSW), Shipping Australia, the Customs Brokers and Freight Forwarders Council Australia, Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service and the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service.

Freight strategy for Queensland
Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
The Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) is developing a freight strategy for Queensland with input from industry via the Queensland Transport and Logistics Council (QTLC).

The aim of the strategy is to position Queensland to manage current and future freight demands across all modes to support industry and consumer needs as well as broader economic, social, safety and environmental outcomes in the state.

The strategy will reflect the ‘supply chain’ approach to the ongoing development of the freight transport system. This will place particular emphasis on facilitating integration between modes, and where possible, encourage the exploitation of the unique characteristics and inherent relative advantage of each mode to deliver an integrated transport solution.

Shangli Launched it New CPCD40/45/50 Forklift Line at the 107th Canton Fair.
These new forklifts are rated for 4 to 5 ton capacity, with Cummins B3.3-C80 4 cylinder diesel engines. Compare with normal 5 ton diesel forklift, these models are compact, with a turning radius narrower than its competitors. But power has not been sacrificed, and the machines have the some ratings as rivals in the 5 ton category. The compact design also allows these forklifts to operate with containers - without any design changes. Meanwhile, because of their narrow design, Shangli forklifts can be fitted with more attachments than bigger 5 ton equivalents – at a much lower price.
